To report a problem or ask a question, email apps.saleh@pm.me. If a receipt was read badly, a description of it helps: the shop, and roughly what went wrong.
The scan got an item or a price wrong.
On the Review screen, tap any name or price to fix it. You can also add or delete items, and the text the scan read is kept at the bottom of that screen. Faded paper, creases and dim light make scans less accurate. Flat, well-lit receipts read best.
The total doesn’t match the receipt.
The Review screen checks the receipt against itself: its items and tax, plus any tip it printed, against its total. The tip you choose in the app is never part of that check. If they differ, a price or the tax was usually misread, so compare them with the receipt.
How are tax and tip shared?
Each has its own choice on the Tax & tip screen: Everyone equally, or By what they ordered, where whoever ordered more pays more. Tax starts by what they ordered, since it is charged on each item’s price, and the tip starts equal. A percentage tip is worked out on the items, before tax.
Why is no tax added on my receipt?
In the UK and most of Europe, VAT is already in the prices and the receipt only lists it. When the receipt says so, or its items already add up to the total, Split Jar shows the tax as included and doesn’t add it again.
Why can’t I open the summary?
Every item needs someone to pay for it. On the Review screen, tap the circle next to an item and pick a person, or Everyone for something the table shared, like a starter. The summary opens once every item has someone.
Why is one share a cent more than another?
Money can’t always be divided evenly. $10.00 split three ways is $3.34, $3.33 and $3.33. Split Jar hands out the leftover cents so the shares add up exactly to the total.
How does the running balance work?
Set who paid on a split, and everyone else’s share is owed to that person. The Balances screen nets every bill and lists the fewest payments to settle up. Tap Paid once the money has moved. People are matched by name, so use the same spelling each time.
How do I change the currency?
Tap the gear on the home screen to open Settings and pick a currency: US dollar, Canadian dollar, euro, British pound, UAE dirham, Saudi riyal, Kuwaiti dinar or Bahraini dinar. New splits use it, and receipts are read for it, so dinar prices keep their three decimals. Splits you’ve already made keep the currency they were made in.
Do the people I split with need the app?
No. Only you use it. Send each person their share from the summary as a message or a picture.
Do I need an account or internet?
No. Split Jar works offline, with no sign-in.
Can I move my splits to a new phone?
They move with a normal iPhone backup and restore, or a phone-to-phone transfer. The app has no syncing of its own.
